First of all, a big thank–you for all your hard work to make Wednesday′s public meeting such a success. Approximately 125 people came to the Salvation Army Citadel for the act of worship and Nick King′s talk on “The Biblical Roots of Christian Unity” which, from the feedback I′ve received, went down extremely well. Nick was certainly very impressed with our turn–out and welcome. The denominational spread was excellent, and we had people attend who′ve never been to a Churches Together event before. Thanks be to God!
Churches Together in York Request for wider representation on our Enabling Group. As the new Vice–Chair of Churches Together in York, I′d like to make an appeal for volunteers on behalf of the Enabling Group. We have strong representation from the Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions, which is great, but we would really value the input of more members from other Churches. In particular, we′d like representatives from the Free Churches (Methodists, Baptists, Evangelicals, etc.) and newer congregations, so that we can better reflect the rich diversity of Christ′s body in York. Churches might like to nominate representatives, or individuals can come forward, to be co–opted onto the Enabling Group which meets approximately six times a year. For further information or to volunteer, please contact me or any member of the Enabling Group. Thank you! Yours in Christ, Johan.

HANDING ON THE TORCH – Sacred words for a secular world
Archbishop Sentamu (97th Archbishop of York), Clifford Longley JP (Roman Catholic writer and broadcaster) and Rachel Lampard (Methodist Adviser on political and social issues) are among the distinguished contributors to the new Lent course CD from York Courses. Dr David Hope introduces the course and Bishop Graham Cray provides the thoughtful closing reflections on the CD.
Canon John Young has written the course booklet for Handing on the Torch – Sacred words for a secular world. Each of the 5 sessions offers a good selection of stimulating questions aimed at engaging every group member.
Course synopsis:
Christianity is the largest movement our world has ever seen. It continues to grow at an immense pace – especially in Asia (including China), Africa and Latin America. At the same time, Christianity in the West struggles to grow and – perhaps – even to survive. In this course we consider some of the reasons for this and what it might mean for individual Christians, for churches and for Western culture, in a world where alternative beliefs are increasingly on offer.
