CTY Meetings

CTY AGM 17th June 2008 at St George’s RC Church

Main Speaker Bishop Martin initially spoke about the Church being the Community of the City citing that currently Church life in the city is reflected by over 50 different Christian organisations within the square mile of the city.

Questioning whether we are impacting sufficiently on the Corporate and Public sectors, Bishop Martin referred to 5 doorways about York leading to the application of the words “God so loved the world”

  1. York as an inclusive City : full of entertainment, but, which you need money to enjoy illustrated starkly by the truth that the lowest earners in our society are the ones that keep the services moving e.g. a cleaner in a hospital has the power by their actions to close a ward or a hospital.
  2. York as a symbolic City: Bishop Martin questioned what exactly is the people`s image of York?
  3. York as a surprising City: History has taken the City into a variety of different political, social and employment directions, but, currently are we being proactive or reactive in moulding the change for the future? Are we taking the opportunities available to us?
  4. York as a Connected City: Bishop Martin questioned how ,what we all do on a Sunday, relates to what we do on a Monday
  5. York as a Dream of a City: How society has changed! We can travel the world but we no longer talk to our neighbour. We have everything available to us and yet we see rocketing sales of anti- depressants.

There has never before been such a need for the Church to lead and become the hub and link to the Community and then mould, focus and lead the Community in and of the City of York.
